How to Bribe the Kitchen God Living in Your Stove?
Discover how China’s Lunar New Year celebrations begin with rituals and offerings to the kitchen god during the Little New Year
Today marks the celebration of the Little New Year, or “Xiaonian,” in northern China, while southern China observes it tomorrow. On this day, people honor the Hearth God (Zaoshen), who is believed to oversee the kitchen and record a family’s deeds throughout the year. Before the Hearth God reports to the Heavenly Emperor, families “bribe” him with treats to ensure he speaks kindly on their behalf.
